Laps for Lincoln:  Thank you for your generous donations thus far during our
fundraising campaign.  We have three more collection dates before the big night. We
will celebrate our fundraiser with a walk around Lincoln Field on Friday, October 5th
from 5:00 - 6:30 p.m. Returning this year are many of the food trucks from last year's
celebration. I apologize in advance as I will not be attending. My step-daughter Olivia
Starks is a celebrity chef in the Taste Sensation raising money for the Hanson Hospice
Center. If you know your family will be there and you, along with your child/family
would be willing to lead our 2nd grade in the first lap please let me know.

Word Work:  This week we will be using closed syllable words to practice inflected
endings like -ed and -ing.  Please read through this week’s list and talk about the
different words with your child. During the week we will talk about how when there
is 1 consonant at the end of the word, that consonant needs to be doubled before
adding an ending.  Spelling City has Unit 1.1 ready to practice the words. I will
also be sending a matching activity home on Tuesday for homework.

Reading: Please see the additional post on the importance of reading. I have attached a
poster that highlights the results of 20 minutes of reading and attached a link from
Edutopia written by Reading Rainbow LeVar Burton. While it is written for teachers, it
works for parents-you are their greatest teacher. One of the things he talks about is reading
to them-they love this. We have two resources where the children can listen to reading
and this is sometimes less uncomfortable or intimidating. You can find RAZ Reading
and Story Line Online both on our Lincoln Symbaloo.

iXL: The iXL math program should be working now. My apologies for the delay.

Social Studies:  Our second graders will begin to learn about communities.  Please
ask your child what he/she knows about where they live, work, and play.

Science:   We will begin our Mystery Science Unit, Animal Adventures this week.  The unit has some great videos and activities that the children can respond
to in their interactive science journals.
